Mazingira Conservation Works: 2022 update

Updated: Mar 11

We wanted to send an update to let you know what has happened with Adventure for Rhinos and the Mazingira Conservation Fund.

Your generous support has not gone unnoticed and is being used to promote conservation in communities in the Greater Laikipia Landscape

A small grant was made to the Dupoto Beekeepers/Mukogodo Forest Community Association to repair a vehicle that supports enterprise development and income generation in the landscape using beekeeping and bee products.

Another small grant was given to the Kenya Birds of Prey Trust to support their raptor conservation efforts – including emergency treatment of injured and poisoned endangered and critically endangered birds of prey.

A third small grant was made to the Il Ngwesi Conservancy, a Maasai-led conservancy

bordering two private conservancies with healthy rhino populations. We helped to establish water points that separate community and wildlife water needs, thus reducing Human Wildlife Conflicts.

Our informal fundraising has been so successful that we are moving to

establish a trust. Given the importance and success of these small grants, and the need for consistency in grant giving, we have moved to consolidate all funds raised under one grant-making body –

Update 1: What is Mazingira Conservation Fund (MCF)?

MCF is designed to support sustainable natural resources management within the Greater Laikipia Landscape. Overtime, we expect it to grow to support other initiatives in other conservation landscape and countries.

Vision: Conservation, Community and Commerce (CCC) combined in positive benefits for wildlife and their habitats.

Mission: to channel funds to support local initiatives that result in benefits to people, wildlife, and their habitats

Values:

Diversity, Inclusion and Empowerment – we strive to create a

more diverse and inclusive agency by supporting local communities,

women, and youth to be at the forefront of action and solutions.

Respect for People, Wildlife and Environment- we honor the voices and knowledge of the people and communities with whom we work, and we respect their knowledge of the wildlife, and the environment in which they live.

Responsibility – all that interact and work with MCF have a responsibility to protect the environment and to practice responsible environmental citizenry.

Courage and Creativity- we support creative and courageous projects that protect habitats and secure wildlife conservation.

Update 2: Growth and Going Forward

The Mazingira Conservation Fund is developingand growing. We are currently forming a board inthe USA to allow us to fundraise and drive programming based on greater engagement in our Mission. We want to secure more funds and partners in this effort and believe a U.S. Board will help focus these efforts. The new Board should result in registration as a 501 (c) (3), which allows to fundraise as a registered non-profit in the USA. We have created a grants program manual and plan to start issuing additional small-scale conservation grants in 2022, from the interest raised on theprincipal capital in the MCF.

Update 3: What do you mean by grants?

MCF is very much focused on supporting capacity building of Kenyans who can make a difference in conservation. We believe that having engagement and ownership of a project leads to the greatest success. We encourage communities, organizations, and individuals in the Greater Laikipia landscape to apply for grants to pursue their conservation

projects.

Our efforts will support grant writing workshops for successful conservation concepts, with the goal of supporting 2-3 grants per year. The Laikipia (Wildlife) Forum will help with grants management and administration.

Update 4: The Fund is growing!

We have managed to grow your commitments. The Fund that was started by Adventure for Rhinos in 2020 yielded almost $45,000 USD. We now have a principal amount of over $75,000 in a fixed deposit account yielding 9% annually. We want to raise this principal investment to $100K in 2022. The interest from this investment supports the grants and their

administration.
