2023 ushered in the first round of grants under MCF

We wanted to send an update to let you know what is happening with the Mazingira Conservation Fund. Your generous support has not gone unnoticed and is being used to
promote conservation in communities in the Greater Laikipia Landscape.
Grant applicants go through 4 steps:
1. Submission of a 2-pp grant concept supported by a rough budget
and letter of endorsement. In March 24 grant concepts were
submitted in hopes of being shortlisted.
2. In April, 5 grant concepts were selected for further development
and refinement.
3. At least two individuals from the shortlisted 5 grant applicants
came together for an intensive project development training in May.
4. Up to five Grants will be awarded at the end of May based on the
quality of the final proposals, budgets, and monitoring plans
The five finalists include community organizations dedicated to the mission and goals of the MCF. (Click on each image to learn more about the projects)

One project is with women’s group dedicated to primate protection along a
riverine habitat that focuses on habitat restoration and conservation.
One project is with a women’s group attempting to work with a cooperative
livestock venture supporting women’s role in livestock husbandry and rangelands
restoration.
One project is with a community forest association attempting to improve
tourism opportunities and facilities within the national forest reserve for
which they are the responsible stewards.
One project is with a youth group focused on education related to climate
change and the role that students can play in climate change mitigation
activities.
One project is with a women’s group attempting to rid local rangelands of an
invasive plant species and to restore grass cover and grass quality
Once final project proposals are completed with the guidance of the Laikipia Wildlife Forum, these community groups will be awarded their grants. Each grant is
expected to commence in June of 2023 and be completed by the end of the year. Each grant is for $2500 and grant recipients will be mentored by Forum staff.
Stay tuned for updates on the progress of each grant recipient. Please consider supporting future projects like this through Mazingira Conservation Fund
