Protecting the Rhodope Mountains — From the Ground Up
This year, our work in Bulgaria is focused on something foundational — both for us, and in support of the protection of Europe’s richest natural diversiity - the Rhodopes landscape.
Mazingira Adventures is launching its first trips to this spectacular region of Bulgaria – new routes, new itenerary, and new partnerships.
Our trips support the conservation efforts of this unique and special area – as ancient as Greek mythology, and as contemporary as the boundary of the old “iron curtain separating the Soviet Union from Greece and the West.
The Rhodopes are one of Europe’s most biologically and culturally rich mountain systems. But they remain challenged to become part of Bulgaria’s protected area system, and part of EU efforts to secure large living landscapes. Ancient forests, wildlife, cultural and historical sites, traditional livelihoods, crafts and arts, survive here in special combinations fast disppearing from Europe.
Over the next 10 years, we are supporting this road map towards the collective vision for the Western Rhodopes protected area.
