Ontulili Primates Protection (OPP)

WHO IS ONTULILI PRIMATE PROTECTION?

Ontulili Primates Protection (OPP) is a grassroots, women-led community organization dedicated to conserving natural resources and primates in Kenya’s Ontulili River sub-catchment, Laikipia, Kenya. Founded in 2020, OPP works to promote harmonious coexistence among people, forests, and wildlife through a range of initiatives, including primate monitoring, forest and catchment restoration, community education, conservation art, and sustainable livelihood support.

WHAT DID THE MCW GRANT SUPPORT?

Ontulili Primates Protection (OPP) distributed 3,000 water-friendly trees to 100 farmers, 100 grass cuttings to 23 farmers, and planted bamboo along the Ontulili River, which helped to restore the riparian corridor.  OPP also engaged farmers in comprehensive training on riparian restoration, fostering co-existence between humans and primates. Further, OPP conducted art classes with student groups to help increase a deeper connection with the environment through art.
